How do I join?

There are 2 ways to participate at The Maker Garden. Join our online community for free and have access to our Blog to share your ideas or to be inspired for a new project you want to start. The best way to join us is by becoming a full paid member. With a membership you will have access to our facilities, tools and equipment and be a part of our community of Makers.

What kind of tools will you have?

We will have tools for electronics, robotics, woodworking, jewellery & metalworking, welding, laser cutting, 3D printing, machining, bicycle maintenance, fibre arts, screen-printing and more. Members will also have the opportunity to participate in choosing what tools we add to the workshop as funds become available.

Can I use Maker Garden tools without having to take a class?

Monthly and daily members have access to our tools but are required to demonstrate familiarity with equipment before being allowed to use it unsupervised through our tool testing certification process. This is to protect our equipment and our members.

What is tool testing?

Testing is for people ready to demonstrate familiarity and safe use of our tools. You may qualify for testing without training depending on your experience. Some of our tools require both training and testing, regardless of prior experience.

What materials are available for general use?

Members are expected to supply their own materials. We will have a woodbin and a variety of small electronic components that are available for general use. As well, we intend to have a basic retail store offering a variety of regularly used materials.

I’ve never made anything before, is that OK?

Absolutely! Most of our workshops are designed to assist people who have little or no experience with the topic. Our facilitators and members are enthusiastic about their areas of knowledge and love to get new people making. Any prerequisites for workshops will be listed in the description of the workshop on the registration page.

Do I have to be a member to take workshops at The Maker Garden?

Nope. All of our workshops, tool training sessions and testing are open to everyone and do not require a membership.

When are you offering a specific workshop again?

If a workshop is currently not open for registration, we are likely working with our team of facilitators to schedule the next session. Sign-up for our mailing list to be the first to know when a workshop becomes available.

Are you looking for facilitators to assist in workshops?

Yes! Here is more about being a facilitator at The Maker Garden.

Is there an age minimum for classes or membership?

We have a minimum age requirement of 5 years. Children attending workshops must be able to use the washroom un-assisted. Makers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult while working in the shop area.

Do I have to register in advance?

Yes. All participants will need to register in advance for all workshops.

Can I register for a workshop over the phone?

Yes. Call us anytime between 8am and 7pm (M to F) and we can get you set up and registered for your workshop.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Our cancellation policy is as follows: 10% fee when you cancel more than 2 weeks before program start date. No refunds for cancellations within 2 weeks before program start date.

Do I need to bring anything to my workshop?

Once you have registered for a workshop you will receive a welcome package. The welcome package will explain what, if anything, you will need to bring to your workshop.

For the day workshops, do I need to bring food?

Yes. We encourage you to bring any food or drink you need to stay alive for the day. We only have 3 restrictions: no alcohol, no tree nuts, and food must stay in designated areas of the workshop. We will provide access to clean drinking water.

Can my child join a workshop if they don’t meet the age requirement?

Not at this time. Due to the content of most workshops, some children may struggle with the curriculum and may not have the positive experience we are looking to provide. If you have further questions please don’t hesitate to contact us

Will I be able to store my projects?

Storage rental is available by the month to individual monthly members. We are currently putting together a storage program and will update our website when it is complete.

Do I need to be a member to rent storage and/or studio space?

Yes, storage and studio space is available for an additional fee to individual monthly members only. See our Studio and Storage Space page for more information. Some restrictions may apply.

Is there a waitlist for studio space?

Yes. There is no commitment or fee to get on our studio space waiting list. If we contact you and you’re not ready for a studio space, you’ll stay at the top of the list and will be contacted as spaces become available.

I’d like to pay to have something built for me. Can you help?

We are not a job shop, but we do have a number of members who run jobs out of the space. If you’re interested in having something built for you, contact us and we can see if anyone is interested in taking on the job. TMG makes no recommendations and takes no responsibility for any work arrangements, we simply facilitate communication.
